Funeral directors in West Derby, Liverpool

Celebrating life the modern way

Female led independent funeral care, with bespoke funeral choices and a spa like funeral parlour.

As seen on Channel 4: The Fabulous Funeral Parlour, a documentary about Butterflies Rising Funeral Care.

Our story

Not a traditional funeral parlour

Butterflies Rising was founded by Hayley McCaughran, who left the beauty industry to open her own funeral parlour after losing her mum to cancer in 2019. She told the BBC she “wanted to turn my pain and grief into something positive”.

The result is a funeral home that families describe as calm, personal and kind, with a team that treats the person in its care as someone who is still very much themselves.

“Ours, when you walk in, is like a spa.”

Hayley McCaughran, speaking to BBC News

The parlour

A spa like funeral parlour

When someone walks in, they feel relaxed and calm, and they know their loved one is being cared for in a gorgeous environment.

A room in the parlour with a painted mural of an arched stairway rising into clouds, a cream armchair and a gold-trimmed curtain
A washroom painted with angels in gold and sky blue, with a gold-framed mirror
A chandelier of softly glowing blue butterflies hanging in a round ceiling opening

What you will find inside

  • A 10ft waterfall
  • The scent of baby powder
  • A halo
  • An angel swing

As described by Hayley McCaughran to BBC News.

How we care

Care that goes beyond the practical

Nothing is too much trouble. That is what families say about the Butterflies Rising team, again and again.

  • 01

    Bespoke funeral choices

Every family decides how the day should feel. If you want a celebration rather than a sombre goodbye, we are more than happy to oblige.

Their own words: bespoke funeral choices

  • 02

Looking after the person in our care

We bring the personality of the person back to life: dressed in their best outfit, wearing the right aftershave, their hair and make-up done the way they would have wanted.

Described by the BBC and by families

  • 03

    Words that fit

When we make a nameplate, we ask whether the person had a favourite saying, so the words on it are theirs.

  • 04

    Eco coffins and caskets

Eco coffins and caskets are part of the choices we offer to families.

Their own words: eco coffins & caskets

  • 05

    Support that carries on

Families write about being supported on the day itself, about visits to the hospice before a funeral, and about flowers arriving a year on, asking how everyone is doing.

When we lost our mum butterflies were the first funeral directors we contact and wow, we are so glad we did the chapel alone is simply breathtaking. From the moment we met Hayley and Neil we knew this is where we wanted my mum to rest. The care my mum received from the minute she was in their care to the to the minute she left she couldn’t of received any better anywhere else. Although it was the worst moment of our lives Hayley, Neil and the team made the situation a lot more bearable, their kindness and compassion throughout I guarantee you won’t receive anywhere else. We cannot recommend Butterflies enough, on behalf of myself and my entire family thankyou all so very much Hayley and the team truly are one of a kind✨🫶🏻💛

  • This is not just a funeral home, it’s a forever home. Hayley and her beautiful team Vicki, Neil, Tom, Ben & drivers handle their work with such love and care all while keeping it so professional. Hayley had so much time for my mum before her passing from helping us plan her funeral but also visiting the hospice to give her a lovely massage. Vicki and Neil done a brilliant job at collecting my mum respectfully and getting her to butterflies safely. Tom brought my mums body back to her old self. Just when I thought I’d lost my mum forever Hayley brought her image back for me by doing her make up so beautifully just how my mum had asked her too. The parlour is so dreamy & immaculate. Right down to supporting not just me but my whole family on the day of the funeral nothing is too much for the butterflies team. Nearly one year on and I have made friends for life. I could right a book on this beautiful business. Well done Hayley for building such a wonderful team and turning the worst time in life to an easier one. Your mum will be beaming with pride. Love you all xxx

  • Absolutely amazing funeral directors. Supported us with giving my mum a unique send off truly fitting to the person that she was. Went above and beyond with advice and support and took such good care of my mum whilst she was in their care. I highly recommend them as our experience was fantastic, so many small personal touches and nothing was too much for them. I've never known a funeral directors like it and they made the most difficult time as stress free as possible for us 🤍

  • We used butterflies rising for my mum last year, yesterday was her first anniversary of her passing. We arrived home from visiting the grave and bench and of course the hospice where mum passed to some beautiful flowers that were left next door. To see dads face light up when he seen who they were from was a lovely sight. Hayley had sent them asking how we were all doing a year on. This gesture alone shows the personal touch of a person who not only cares, however goes above and beyond within their work. Absolutely outstanding professional service with the personal touch. We will be forever grateful to Hayley and the butterflies rising team, we can’t thank you enough for the care you have shown throughout losing mum.
